What’s dry, brittle and sometimes green? Your child’s hair after swimming! But doesn’t have to be. Here are some tips that will help your child have healthy hair even during swim season.
1. Wet the hair and apply a leave-in conditioner before getting into the pool.
When hair is wet, it tends to be less absorbent than dry hair. So getting in the pool with wet hair decreases the chance of the chlorine or salt water molecules being absorbed in the hair. Coating the hair with a leave-in conditioner protects the hair from the chlorine as well.
2. Wear a swimming cap during swim.
A swim cap can work really well if it is the right size and put on properly. With a swim cap you can avoid getting any contact with a chlorine or salt water. Swim caps are reusable, easy to clean and pack in your swim bag.
3. Shampoo hair with a clarifying shampoo immediately after swim and follow with a moisture conditioner.
Shampooing with a clarifying conditioner is a must after swimming. In order to make sure there is no chlorine left in the hair after swimming, use a clarifying shampoo. If you use a non-clarifying shampoo, chlorine or salt molecules will remain in the hair and cause brittle/dry hair. After shampooing, following with a moisture conditioner.
4. Get hair trimmed every 4-7 week during swimming season.
The ends of the hair are the weakest part of a hair stand. Therefore, the ends are the most affected by pool water. To maintain healthy hair it is important to trim the ends. The healthier the hair is the less porous and absorbent it is.
